This viral video has people’s hearts melt for the past few days. Ben Bird, a garbage man, is shown walking up to a garden path with a pink and white birthday cake in his hands.
This cake was for his good friend Dorothy Ballard, known as Mercy, who had turned 100 years on that same day.
For almost 8 years Ben has been collecting Mercy’s garbage. On his visits, the two of them developed a friendship unlike any other. They always chat for about ten minutes every Thursday from 8:00 to 8:10 (the time of Ben’s visits). In their brief conversations, the two of them talked on variety of topics, from technology to family.
Ben had promised Mercy that once she reaches 100 years old, he will come to her house with a birthday cake. Once Mercy reached 100, the same day Ben alongside two of his friends showed up to Mercy’s doorstep to surprise her and celebrate her birthday.
Mercy’s second-oldest granddaughter, Katy Smith, shared this amazing video online and since then it became viral. On the video, Ben is seen walking up to Mercy’s garden and waiting by the door with the cake. When Mercy opens the door, Ben begins singing her happy birthday and Mercy is seen crying with her hands on her face completely touched and surprised by this man’s action.
After Mercy blows the candles, Ben tells her to make a wish and suggests her that the wish should be living to 105.
Katy is thankful to family, friends, neighbors, and people like Ben that took time from their lives to make her day feel special.
