Recent years have proven that yoga has been an amazing exercise for both the mind (mental health) and body (physical health).
However, some health concerns require the use of yoga for permanent results.
Anna Pesce, an 86-year-old woman, suffered from scoliosis for a long time. This grandmother had the condition so bad she had to use a wheelchair to move around.
Scoliosis is a condition of the back, giving the spine a noticeable curvy look. More than 4 million people in the USA are affected by this condition. However, science has still yet to determine the cause of this disease.
Most of the patients are offered a spinal-correction brace or surgery for the treatment of scoliosis. Recently, it has been proven that the main healer for this condition is exercise.
Anna felt that this condition started to take over her life. After a trip to Wagener, SC to visit her family, she was in a lot of pain and it took away her joy of spending time with her loved and close relatives. She decided that she had to take initiative and try to change something about her lifestyle that will help her be relieved from the pain.
Anna stated that “I tried everything: acupuncture, a physical therapist and seeing a chiropractor. You feel good temporarily, but (I’d be) in pain again soon after.”
She had many unsuccessful attempts at different therapies to help ease the burden of her constant pain. Anna’s daughter decided to introduce her to Rachel Jesien, an instructor for yoga and a back specialist.
Anna and Rachel started working together by learning restorative poses and stretches. Anna saw amazing results after just one month of yoga. She got back on her feet and started walking again!
Rachel stated that “After two months, another big milestone was that (Anna) knew what poses to do whenever the usual pains would come up for her, for example, if she was having hip pain, she’d sit on a chair and do an ankle-to-knee pose.”
Similar techniques were used by Rachel after she used them on herself for scoliosis. She learned these techniques from a massage therapist that told her about yoga-based treatment and the wonders it can bring.
Rachel added, “I had to wear a back brace for five years and went to physical therapy every week, but this was the only thing that worked.”
This treatment did a miracle to the body of Anna. Now, she can drive herself anywhere and can do all of the things she couldn’t have done before.
Many studies have shown that yoga can play a big part in the treatment of many mental and physical conditions which the traditional treatments weren’t able to fix. These conditions can be heart disease, obesity, stress, depression, and many more. Many people throughout the world started doing yoga as a way to treat conditions instead of using prescription drugs and treatments that can worsen their well being.
