According to Barbara De Angelis, kindness and love are never wasted, because they always make a difference and bless the one who receives them and the one who gives them.
Reminders of certain acts of kindness are always good, and what we are going to talk about here deserves attention because it is an original way of expressing kindness. In 2014, when Thomas Moore was 8 years old, his mom showed him a video of then-5-year-old Kyssi Andrews, a girl with cancer who lost her hair due to chemotherapy treatments. The health of Kyssi and all the other children suffering from such and similar illnesses hit Thomas hard, and he began to think about how he could help them. He then came up with the idea of giving these kids what they lacked, which in his view would be to give them hair to make a wig. This idea made Thomas a superhero, as he really was when his story went viral immediately after his aunt shared it on social networks and collected 57,000 likes in a short time. This selfless act of kindness on the part of the little boy truly astounded people.
Two years without a barber
Thomas was at the back of his mom Angela when she watched Kyssi’s video, and he began to seek an explanation of why Keyssi was in this situation. His mother then explained to him the basics of cancer and that chemotherapy leads to hair loss. She further explained to him the action of drugs, against cancerous cells, and their attack on other healthy cells in the body. In this way, these drugs affect the cells that support the hair roots on the scalp and throughout the body. Eventually, she told him that people who go through chemo in addition to losing their hair experience a lot of pain.
This prompted Thomas to do something for the poor girl, thinking that it might not be easy at all to lose so much hair and such a young age.
Then Thomas decided not to cut his hair until he had grown long enough to make two wigs for her. At first, he was not aware of how long it would take, but his will was overwhelming to grow his hair to suit the girl’s radiant taste.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Tom’s aunt, Amber Ray described how dedicated he was to achieving his goal. She said:
“It started off just fine when his hair was shorter. But as the afro grew, they had to cornrow it to keep it nice and tame.”
She explained that the time of two years of growing his hair was not easy, because he had a gentle scalp, and often his hair was tangled and caused him a lot of pain. There were times when he was tempted to quit but had full support from the family.
Three wigs for three cancer survivors
After two years, 10-year-old Thomas went to comb his hair in a wig salon. His long strands were about 17 inches of fine hair, enough for a stylist to make three wigs!
In an interview with NBC4 in 2016, Tom’s mom stated that she was overwhelmingly amazed at her son’s unlimited selflessness.
She added that he is really fantastic that he felt like he could do something so selfless to help somebody else so much. Thomas was, also famous at school during those two years, as his hair was so full and long.
Sometimes he was, understandably nervous, going to school with such a haircut, but it was still worth it. Thomas wasn’t expecting anything in return, the only thing he was looking forward to seeing was the smile on the girl’s face. Thomas’ selfless act has melted hearts all over the world and everyone who has heard about it cannot forget it.
Experts believe that children at a young age should be taught the virtues of kindness and charity. Every adult should have a duty to educate children about joy and love when they do something beautiful to someone.
