One of the biggest problems in the USA for a long time has been the increasing number of homeless people. According to the estimation of the US Department of Housing in 2018, there were about 553,000 homeless people. Apart from the fact that these people do not have a home for living, they cannot find a job either, because employers require their employees to have a permanent address.

Many humanitarian organizations and governmental institutions have been addressing this problem.

For example, the Other Ones Foundation (OOF) helps these people with employment and some initial help. This foundation is trying to bring these unhappy people back into the mainstream of society, helping them not be dependent on others, and at the same time providing them with support, shelter, and food.

Among other things, OOF provides employment opportunities in places where you are not required to provide a permanent address of living. The jobs that they provide are extensive cleaning of the local environment, maintenance of public art sculptures and other works, and enrichment of protected animals.

When hired, they earn $ 15 and are provided with lunch and reimbursed for commuting to and from work. For many of them, better services are also offered, so they can be promoted to permanent employment as well as accommodation. OOF offers the homeless the opportunity to use Golden Road services, so they can feed there, do laundry, use showers, the Internet, as well as daily hours of sleep.

The total annual fund that OOF provides to the homeless is about $ 100,000. However, these OOF activities have paid off so far, as 24 of them have already managed to move into stable homes. Seeing it as a worthwhile program has been endorsed by members of the Austin City Council, and now the program has been intensified and grown more than sevenfold than it was in 2018. This transformative measure has proven to be very useful, providing shelter for the needy.

People are organized into work crews and they get jobs every day in various places and sometimes get hired on weekends. They do jobs that improve the environment, including cleaning homeless camps, cleaning graffiti on walls, and many such tasks.

According to the foundation’s executive director, Chris Baker, the number of people who would like to be engaged in this process is increasing daily and is confident that recent funding will help increase the number of participants. There are several benefits to the whole program so that in addition to employment opportunities, these people are given a sense of worth, hope, and dignity of themselves.

The program is also strongly supported by Austin Mayor Steve Adler, and his goal is to get as many people and organizations working in Public Health and Parks and Recreation as possible to work with the program. This is a challenge for the OOF, so now it plans to further expand its ventures, spreading the idea to other cities and involving many more workers in the process. Such and similar ventures in society need to be expanded to eradicate poverty, homelessness, and unemployment in the United States and around the world.
