Ikea invented something that can inspire many people who are willing to grow their food at home but, unfortunately, they don’t have a garden place. The indoor hydroponic garden is the solution offered by Ikea, which allows anyone to grow fresh produce at home. The people who accept that solution even don’t need any previous gardening experience.
From the experience, it is reported that this method can help anyone to grow many of the veggies widely available today and the successful growth of plants requires, only adequate light and water.
The absorbent foam plugs contained in the Ikea system, enable the seeds to sprout and keep the seeds moist without adding a lot of water. When seeds germinate, the foam plus are transferred into its separate small pot and filled with pumice stones, which are necessary for easy retaining water.
All pots should be kept in a growing tray equipped with a solar lamp, which is an efficient system in the rooms without any sunlight. However, whenever is possible, it would be best to place it on a windowsill that gets a lot of suns.
To ensure that the plants are given the ideal amount of water it is recommended to install a water sensor.
According to Helena Karlén, from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, it was a challenge for them to make growing plants in a hydroponic system simple so that anyone could succeed.
The design of this home garden was made as a result of the collaboration with agricultural scientists in Sweden. This product aimed to allow people who live in apartments or don’t have a garden to grow fresh food, as well as for those who want completely fresh produce even during the winter.
The product developer at IKEA Ronnie Runesson said:
“We wanted to create gardening kits that would simplify for people to grow their herbs and vegetables 12 months a year.
Whether you live in the northern parts of Sweden in the wintertime or if you live in China or North America, you should be able to succeed with your garden. It’s about creating a more sustainable and healthier life at home for everyone”.
This is a part of the basic VÄXER series, which includes everything you need to get started, seeds, plugs, starter, cultivation insert set, nursery box, fertilizer, cultivation light fixture, pumice stones, and cultivation light.
This system follows the Ikea’s eco-friendly trend towards sustainability and is more affordable than others of its kind. It is great for people with minimal space and without the experience of growing plants.
If you can see this product is a departure from IKEA’s usual catalog of items, such as bookshelves and tables and stays away from a traditional retail business model. However, IKEA’s head of sustainability famously proclaimed that the Western world had hit “peak home furnishings” and they declared that they are working on helping customers to live more eco-friendly lives.
