Many artists have found their source of inspiration in animals, which are used in art in many different ways. They can explore their relationships with wildlife thinking about how people care for animals and the environment. They can also explore the animal’s habitats and their ecosystems that are the central themes for artists.

Historical Development of Drawing and Painting Animals

Stone Age – the images of the animals hunted for food are found in decorated caves

Ancient Egyptian – artists portrayed many of their gods with the heads of animals.

Tribal artists – they combined animal and human features to symbolize man’s bond with his natural environment.

Artists in the Middle Ages – using mythical beasts they decorated medieval manuscripts while commonplace creatures.

17th-century artists – painted hunting scenes that illustrated dramatic life and death

18th-century artists – celebrate the natural beauty and majestic power of animals in their natural habitats.

19th-century Victorian artists – focused on sentimental pictures of their domestic pets and livestock.

Artists of the 20th century – they explored the entire range of animal genres.

One of the special directions in art is Disney Art, and the artists who are doing that are licensed to paint Disney. In this context, the term Disneyfication is often used, but is unknown to most people. The sociologists have been used it since 1959 to describe the commercial transformation of society in the form of Walt Disney parks and resorts.

However, Dutch illustrator Isa Bredt gave the term a different meaning. Bradt’s dictionary of ‘Disneyfication,’ introducing animals to the world of animation. The 22-year-old photo artist named her project “Pet Disneyfication,” in which she turns pets into Disney-style illustrations. He presents the animals as if they were the stars of the next Walt Disney movie!

Bredt had been in love with drawing since she was a child, but she turned to it after finishing high school and began to consider it a career. She studied illustration and animation, but left the program during her third year and continued to do portrait pets.

Sporadically, in her spare time for about 5 years, she did “Disneyfication” of pets, because she loved drawing animals in the old Disney style.

She started with this type of art on Reddit, offering free art to people. Wanting to practice Disney style, in 2014 she offered free drawings to people who would send her pictures of their pets. For animals that have lost their owners, she hopes her portraits will help them find their homes forever.

How to Become a Disney Artist

Rob Kaz Art an artist known for Beau the frog & his friends shared the tips on how to become a Disney artist. He is officially licensed in Disney, Star Wars & Peanuts art. Here are some tips he recommended:

  • Before trying to be a Disney artist it is important to be an artist.
  • Studying, learning, developing own style, and painting something else, not Disney stars will be proper guidance.
  • Painting own work, not someone else’s.
  • Sharing artwork to a few hundred people a day by using:
    • Website: showcasing artwork (bio, list of gallery locations, where to buy art, links to social media, etc.)
    • Social media
    • Exhibits, because they often require a commitment of original art to be hung in their show for the length of the exhibit
    • Press – sharing real news, writing a press release for local papers, community magazines, television stations, bloggers, etc.
  • Getting a personal line of art into the world
  • Surrounding with people who support the artist’s career and will provide advice.
  • Thinking ahead and knowing that decisions made can and likely will affect the future.
