A 2012 study shows how children’s relationship with their parents can prolong their lives. The study found that loneliness is a significant factor for the quality of life in older adults. It is with a strong connection with the risk of depression, cognitive impairment and some other health problems like coronary artery disease. Loneliness can even lead to an earlier death.

In the study were included 1,600 adults with an average age of 71. According to researchers, 23 percent of participants who reported being lonely died within six years of the study, while during the same six-year period, only 14 percent of those who reported having companionship died.

The Connection between Social Ties and Health

How the social ties can be important to extending life was examined in another study, which is published in the journal PLoS Medicine in 2010.  According to the study, the social ties are as important as getting active if you are sedentary and losing weight if you are obese.

The author of the study Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Ph.D. stated that the social relationships are important not only to the quality of life but also for longevity.

The human history shows that people have relied on others for survival, protection, and food. Julianne explains that despite modern advancements that allow people to survive easier and can live more independently, it appears that the relationships nonetheless still impact chances of survival.

It is confirmed by numerous researchers that loneliness and social isolation are categorically terrible for the people’s health. Actually, loneliness has been called a bigger health risk than some other risks like smoking or obesity.

The people who spend time with loved ones or friends are often happier. As a powerful antidote to declining health, experts recommend laughing. Laughing boosts the immunity, stimulates both blood flow and mental activity and lower blood pressure.

3) As everyone knows, grandparents can be a major support when it comes to childcare. According to the research, the grandparents who babysit are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia. Here is a Win-win situation, as hanging out with grandma and grandpa is fun for kids too!

4) Invite your parents to come for a visit. Start also making your family tree that maps your history.

5) You can also start a new tradition that will last a lifetime, such as taking an annual family photo, volunteering together or making a favorite family recipe or traveling to a new place on your bucket list.

6) The possibilities are endless.
