Woman Lives in Oldest Mall in America After 48 Abandoned Shops Are Turned Into Homes

America’s oldest indoor shopping mall was built in 1828 and it has been re-imagined since then. After it went out of business in 2008, its three stories were shut down for the mass. Fortunately, it wasn’t shut forever. Evan Granoff bought the place that was since then named The Arcade, and converted into 48 tiny homes.

The shopping mall is located in Providence, Rhode Island. On its ground floor, they built facilitates a few small retail spaces for accommodation. You can find a pizzeria, a cafe, a craft beer bar, international foods, a book emporium, two saloons, and vintage clothing stores. The second and third floors are made into micro-apartments that include living and sleeping spaces, a pantry, and a compact bathroom.

None of the small apartments are supplied with a stove due to zoning regulations.

These lofts are perfect for busy people who travel most of their time for work and need a simple place to rest. Independent people living on their own find peace in these environmentally friendly and modern solutions.

One young woman who lives in The Arcade says: “It’s really all you need for one person.”

The lofts are each nearly 225 square feet, which include larger units accessible at approximately 400 square feet. They are meant to be settled immediately, as they come already furnished, and include with a few space-saving magic tricks.

For example, a stand-up shower is inserted nicely into the corner of the bathroom, and sliding drawers are constructed into the bed frame. One of the tenants recommends using slim clothe hangers in order to maximize space and save on closet space.

She says: “It’s an efficiency kitchen, which doesn’t have a stove, so I bought my own toaster oven. There are just a few cabinets. You don’t need too many dishes here.”

You can add a personal washer and dryer in the larger 400-800 square feet units that have more space. It will save energy from not going downstairs to do laundry.

Each apartment has pretty wide windows. They open out into the center of The Arcade. And privacy is just a pull of the blinds away.

The micro loft gives one resident in The Arcade a sense of security, as she recently moves to the city. As her essential needs are downstairs, she doesn’t need to worry much. She is surrounded by friendly neighbors that make her feel even more at home, knowing she can depend on them when needed.

Fortunately for all residents, the building is equipped with access fobs and cameras. In the evenings, the ground-floor shops are closed to the public.

The best part is:

“You don’t have a lot to get dirty- you don’t have a lot to clean up.”

Sadly, micro condos at The Arcade are in high demand. If you want to experience living in a tiny space like this, you’ll have to add your name to a lengthy waiting list.

On their web site, The Arcade Providence states:

“A trend in cities across the globe, the micro-lofts at the arcade providence offer residents 48 small, attractive living spaces in the center of downtown. These efficiently designed lofts provide a unique opportunity to live in a thriving urban environment.

Most of our lofts are studios and one-bedrooms. There is one 2-bedroom loft and one 3-bedroom loft.”

We should appreciate these eco-friendly lofts in which you can produce less waste. Additionally, you will learn to live a simpler life.
