Knitting and crocheting have become the go-to activity to do during the quarantine. People that did not know how to crochet or knit are watching tutorials online to learn the tricks. Not only will you make an interesting and useful craft but you’ll also ease your stress and anxiety levels by doing this activity.

An example of a useful craft that you can make by crocheting is this nest used for chasing away hornets.

People have been posting their crafts online and some of them are even used as a donation. One woman sewed masks to give to her neighbors and people that passed by her house. Other people made mittens and pouches for baby kangaroos that were affected by the recent wildfires in Australia

However, it’s good to know that there are differences between knitting and crocheting. The activities look similar so why are they different?

Difference Between Knitting and Crocheting

For knitting, crafters use two needles to make their creation. The stitches are moved from one needle to the other to make the weave. The fabric used for knitting is light, stretchy, and soft. There are also fewer stitches involved in knitting compared to crocheting.

Unlike knitting, for crocheting, you’ll only need to use one hook. This hook can be used for multiple projects whereas, for knitting, you’ll need different size needles for other projects. Only one stitch is made at a time using a series of yarn overs. The hook can be inserted in different areas of the project. The fabric used for crocheting is very strong, thick, and more intricate. Compared to knitting, it’s much easier and quicker to crochet since making a mistake won’t cost you lots of time.

Amigurumi

Amigurumi art is created in Japan and it’s an activity of crocheting or knitting tiny animals and mythical creatures using yarn. Amigurumi is made up out of two Japanese words: ami (knitted or crocheted) and nuigurumi (stuffed animal/doll). The creatures can vary in size and you can create almost anything you can imagine in any size you want. Depending on your preference, you can choose either to knit or crochet these tiny creatures.

There are tons of PATTERNS (https://linktr.ee/nansyoops) that you can use for creatures online. One of my favorite patterns is the tiny adorable dragon. With the size of only 20 mm, this small figurine can be placed on your shelf, desk, or used as a keychain.

Before looking into starting this project, make sure that you are at least at an intermediate level of crocheting. The materials that you will be needing are sewing threads, embroidery floss, crochet hook (since this is too small to be knitted), beading needle, glass toy eyes, oil pastels, scissors, and a toothpick.

The main thing about this project is to use embroidery floss instead of yarn. This will help you make such a tiny creature.

For colors, you can choose whichever one you want. Whether it’s your favorite color or the one that you think will look best, use it. You can also make these crafts as a present for your friend so make sure you ask their favorite colors beforehand.

The creator of the NansyOops Etsy store, Anastasia, is the one who uses this technique. Creators on Etsy have been making some incredible crafts. There are other miniature animals that you can make besides the tiny dragon such as bears, foxes, raccoons, cats, and more!

If you are interested in learning how to knit or crochet, do not be discouraged of your age. If an 86-year old man was able to learn how to knit, then so can you!
